Can you really make money playing word games on the Island of Word app?

This popular Android word game for money says you can win real cash and prizes for solving its word puzzles. And with over 500,000 downloads, it's one of the fastest growing games in the genre.

But is Island of Word legit? And does this app pay real money or just waste your time?

We tested the app to find out the truth. And my Island of Word review is covering how this app works, its earning potential, and what some of your better alternatives are.

Want more ways to make money? Checkout:

What Is Island Of Word?

Island of Word is an Android game for money from the developer Dianehurri. It says you can win real money by completing word game puzzles and by winning sweepstakes the app has.

The app is similar to other cash word games like Word Roamer and Words To Win. And on the surface, Island of Word seems like a fun way to make money playing games in your spare time.

However, after testing out this app, I can tell you that it doesn't pay and isn't an effective side hustle.

So, let's take a look at why this is the case and the main reasons you should avoid this app.

No, Island of Word isn't legit, and the app makes it impossible to cash out your earnings. I wasn't able to redeem my $11, and there are many negative reviews for this app that also claim it doesn't pay.

While the game is entertaining for word puzzle fans, in my opinion, the Island of Word app is a scam trying to force users to watch ads so the developer makes money.

Ultimately, you're better off using legitimate apps that pay you for playing games, like Rewarded Play or Cash Giraffe, rather than wasting time with this app.

I downloaded this app to test it out before writing this review. Like most word puzzle games, Island of Word is simple and just takes three steps:

You can download Island of Word for free from the Google Play store. At this time, there's no iPhone version, so you can read our post on the best iOS games for money if you don't have an Android.

Once you download the app, you're ready to play word puzzles; there's no need to create an account or to enter your email to begin playing.

The goal of Island of Word is to solve various word puzzles. Each puzzle is set up in a crossword puzzle style, and you have to use the limited number of tiles you have to create words that fill out the board.

This is a classic word game, so it's not reinventing the wheel. Once you complete a level, you get a digital scratch ticket that you can use to earn rewards like virtual cash or Island of Word coins, which you use to enter sweepstakes.

Levels gradually become harder the longer you play, which can be fun. However, you have to watch unskippable advertisements between each level that last between 10 to 30 seconds or so.

The ads for this game are excessive and can be difficult to exit out of. Plus, the ads are generally for scammy cash games that promise you can win hundreds of dollars but aren't actually legitimate.

The ads make the user experience quite poor for this app, even if you like word puzzles.

You can use digital coins from scratch tickets to enter cash sweepstakes. And while this seems like a great way to earn free money, these sweepstakes are a bit suspicious.

For starters, you need about 2,500 to 3,000 coins to enter sweepstakes. Island of Word has a $50 and $500 sweepstake, with the former being drawn daily and the latter being drawn monthly.

The red flag here is that there's zero proof of past winners. Most sweepstake apps have some sort of “past winners” section or online payment proof, but Island of Word has none.

It doesn't have any rules or explanations about when or how you get paid either. Compared to other real money games, Island of Word certainly seems quite suspicious.

No, Island of Word doesn't pay real money, and the app makes it impossible to cash out. I played Island of Word for about 20 minutes and earned $11 but was unable to redeem any of my winnings since the app blocked me from doing so.

Island of Word says that you can cash out via PayPal or Cash App when you have $7 or more in rewards. But even though I had over $7, the app told me I had to reach $7 to cash out properly.

Other reviewers seem to have a similar experience. So while there are lots of sites that offer users the chance to make money with your phone by playing games, this apparently isn’t one of them.

Yes, Island of Word is a scam, and the app doesn't let you cash out even if you earn over $7. It also spams you with advertisements for other scammy apps, and there's no online payment proof for this app.

Personally, I think you're better off sticking with games that pay you to PayPal or with gift cards, like Mistplay or JustPlay, instead of using Island of Word.

Pros:

Cons:

Since you can't cash out with Island of Word, it's not an effective way to earn money online. However, this doesn't mean you're out of options.

In fact, there are plenty of legit and free apps that pay real money. Some of our favorite ones include:
