Blogging<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>I wanted to start with blogging for this list because it's a personal example and one of my all-time favorite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmonkey.com\/side-hustle-list\/\">side hustles<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I started WebMonkey in 2018. In my first year, the blog only made $1,700. Next year wasn't too much higher, and the blog earned about $7,500.<\/p>\n<p>But in my fourth year of blogging, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmonkey.com\/blog-income-report-2021\/\">WebMonkey made $92,000<\/a>, which is almost\u00a0<em>double\u00a0<\/em>the goal of making $4,000 a month. <strong>This year, it's on track to do over $200,000 which is absolutely crazy to me<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14011\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14011\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-14011 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.webmonkey.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Mediavine-Income-Per-Day.jpg\" alt=\"Mediavine-Income-Per-Day\" width=\"600\" height=\"339\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14011\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A snapshot of daily Mediavine income.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Here's the strategy I used to get here, and it's something you can implement too<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I picked a niche I was very interested in and knew a lot about already (personal finance and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmonkey.com\/make-money-online\/\">making money online<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>I learned the basic of SEO<\/li>\n<li>I started writing long-form content regularly that targets evergreen topics and low-competition keywords<\/li>\n<li>I guest-posted on other sites to build up backlinks to WebMonkey<\/li>\n<li>I monetized my traffic with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmonkey.com\/mediavine-requirements\/\">Mediavine ads<\/a>, affiliate links, and the occasional sponsored post<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This is a pretty simplified outline, but the rest is nuance. Most successful blogging comes down to writing great content that adds value, and then people come.<\/p>\n<p>You won't make $4,000 a month overnight with a blog, so this isn't the right idea if you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmonkey.com\/how-to-make-quick-money-in-one-day\/\">need quick money<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However, I think blogging has immense income potential, and I think my journey from $100 a month in blogging income to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmonkey.com\/how-to-make-20k-a-month\/\">$20,000 a month<\/a> or more is proof of that.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Online_Freelancing\"><\/span><strong>2. Online Freelancing<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Another popular way to make $4,000 per month is to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmonkey.com\/sell-your-skills-online\/\">sell your skills<\/a> as a freelancer. This is also something I've done personally, and I know\u00a0<em>plenty\u00a0<\/em>of other freelancers making this amount of money or more.<\/p>\n<p>What I really like about freelancing is that it's viable for plenty of different fields and skills. And you can often earn a much higher hourly wage than you would working a nine to five.<\/p>\n<p>For example, one of my first side hustles was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmonkey.com\/freelance-writing-guide\/\">freelance writing<\/a>. I did this on the side while I worked at a day job at a marketing agency out of college.<\/p>\n<p><strong>After about a year of moonlighting, the income I was making from writing was slowly matching my day job. So, I decided to quit my job, go all-in on writing, and moved to Colombia for a bit to try the whole digital nomad thing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5439\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5439\" style=\"width: 449px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5439 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.webmonkey.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/86712204_2555102824762285_6422301963924275200_n.jpg\" alt=\"La-Solar-Festival\" width=\"449\" height=\"337\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5439\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Me and one of my best friends at a festival in Medellin, 2020. This was one of the happiest points of my life and a cool adventure.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Anyway, my freelancing writing income surpassed $4,000 a month after about a year of giving things a go. And at its peak, I was earning about $8,000 per month from it while also working on growing my blog.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But freelance writing is just one example, and plenty of other industries lend themselves well to freelancing like<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bookkeeping<\/li>\n<li>Graphic design<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmonkey.com\/make-money-coding\/\">Programming<\/a> (this is how my friend made money while we were in Colombia)<\/li>\n<li>Proofreading and editing<\/li>\n<li>SEO consulting (I've done this as well in the past and made $1,000 to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmonkey.com\/make-3000-a-month\/\">$3,000 a month<\/a> for consulting)<\/li>\n<li>Social media marketing<\/li>\n<li>Web design<\/li>\n<li>Video editing<\/li>\n<li>Virtual assistant work<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You get the idea. And if you're charging $25 to $50 per hour for some of these services, earning $4,000 a month is very realistic.<\/p>\n<p>The only downside is freelancing takes time to find clients. My strategy was to turn to my personal network and use different remote job boards. And as you can see in the video above, the gig economy can yield some impressive earnings if you put in the work.<\/p>\n<p>If you average about $20 per hour with gig work, you need to work 200 hours to make $4,000 a month. This equals 50 hours per week, which is possible if you're not working currently.<\/p>\n<p>You\u00a0<em>could\u00a0<\/em>put in these hours if you have a part-time job as well, but make sure you're sleeping enough and pace yourself so you don't burn out.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Retail_Arbitrage\"><\/span><strong>4. Retail Arbitrage<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Another way you can earn $4,000 a month is to make money with retail arbitrage. This involves buying popular products at a discount and then reselling them online or in-person to turn a profit,<\/p>\n<p>This idea of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmonkey.com\/how-to-flip-money\/\">flipping money<\/a> has been around for ages. But it's become very popular in recent years thanks to the growth of ecommerce.<\/p>\n<p>I've actually interviewed a couple who run a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmonkey.com\/retail-arbitrage\/\">million dollar retail arbitrage business<\/a>, and they source inventory from stores like Walmart and Kohl's to then resell on Amazon FBA.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4280 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.webmonkey.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/amazon-retail-arbitrage.png\" alt=\"amazon-retail-arbitrage\" width=\"261\" height=\"509\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As you can see in the picture, they're clearing about $40,000 per month in revenue. Granted, this took\u00a0a\u00a0<em>long\u00a0<\/em>time to accomplish since retail arbitrage takes practice. It also takes time to build up your inventory and online storefront.<\/p>\n<p>But you can start small, and you don't just have to sell on Amazon FBA for retail arbitrage.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For example, some other popular selling avenues people use include<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Facebook Marketplace<\/strong>: An excellent marketplace for local cash sales.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mercari<\/strong>: A versatile selling app where you can sell almost anything online.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Poshmark<\/strong>: One of the best places to sell clothing, shoes, handbags, and accessories online.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Even throwing a garage sale or selling stuff on Craigslist can work. Real Estate Rentals<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>If the idea of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmonkey.com\/passive-income-streams\/\">passive income<\/a> is appealing, one solution to making $4,000 a month is to get into the real estate game.<\/p>\n<p>Traditionally, people do this by buying rental units so they can become a landlord and generate rental income. Some people also do this by &#8220;house hacking&#8221; in which they purchase a duplex and rent out half of it to a tenant to help cover the mortgage.<\/p>\n<p>This landlord-type approach is one method, and two rentals in many markets would net about $4,000 a month in revenue.<\/p>\n<div class=\"entry-content-asset videofit\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"House Hacking Explained | (Step-By-Step)\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/b6mBqYKfK8g?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>However, the downside to this method is that you generally need a lot of capital to cover the downpayment and any repairs or renovations the property needs.<\/p>\n<p>Thankfully, you can still add real estate to your portfolio and keep things passive by using crowdfunding sites.<\/p>\n<p>For example, companies like <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmonkey.com\/go\/Fundrise\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Fundrise<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/happynest.sjv.io\/YgLGxe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">HappyNest<\/a><\/strong> let you invest in income-generating real estate starting with just $10. You invest in shares of income-generating properties, and both platforms pay out dividends.<\/p>\n<p>Fundrise averages about 8-9% in annual returns, and HappyNest targets a 6% annual dividend. Both averages are much higher than you'll find with a basic checking or savings account.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, real estate has plenty of opportunities if you want to diversify your income. And while it might take a long time to reach $4,000 a month, it's certainly possible.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"6_Create_Passive_Income_Streams\"><\/span><strong>6. Create Passive Income Streams<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Speaking of rental units, you can keep going down the passive income rabbit hole on your quest for making 4K per month.<\/p>\n<p>I personally like creating new passive income streams since it's quite addicting to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmonkey.com\/make-your-money-work-for-you\/\">see your money work for you<\/a> without you having to lift a finger.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Investing in real estate is just one option as well. Once you get monetized, your channel basically becomes a semi-passive income source that you can slowly chip away at and grow over time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For example, I started my channel in 2020. It's one of the larger POD marketplaces out there, but there are other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmonkey.com\/sites-like-redbubble\/\">sites like Redbubble<\/a> as well like Society6 or CafePress.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, you could always try selling physical, digital, or POD products on your own storefront as well.<\/p>\n<p>Platforms like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmonkey.com\/go\/shopify\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Shopify<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmonkey.com\/go\/sellfy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Sellfy<\/a> make launching your own ecommerce store a breeze. I've used both platforms as well and helped scale Shopify stores when I worked in marketing, and even a beginner in the world of ecommerce can manage either platform.<\/p>\n<p>Reaching $4,000 a month is going to take some practice and time.
