Plus, things like YouTube SEO and thumbnail design also play a huge role in how your channel performs.<\/p>\n<p>All in all, <strong>I think these are the main skills successful YouTubers need to have<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The ability to tell a good story<\/li>\n<li>Knowing how to film high quality videos<\/li>\n<li>Knowing how to edit videos<\/li>\n<li>Knowing how to design thumbnails<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Now, this might sound daunting, but all of these skills are something you can learn or even outsource.<\/p>\n<p>For example, I'm awful at making YouTube thumbnails, but I work with a graphic designer who makes the ones for my channel for $20 per thumbnail.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13878\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13878\" style=\"width: 601px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-13878 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.webmonkey.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/passive-income-ideas-2022.jpg\" alt=\"YouTube-thumbnail\" width=\"601\" height=\"338\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13878\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">One of my recent YouTube thumbnails.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I also had zero editing experience before starting a YouTube channel, but my editing skills quickly got better as I kept on practicing.<\/p>\n<p>Really, the main skill I think YouTubers need to have is to be engaging.<\/p>\n<p>This means being good on camera, knowing how to tell a captivating story, and understanding tricks that make people want to watch more of your videos.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Podcast<\/strong> Skills<\/h4>\n<p>Like YouTube, audio is extremely important for running a successful podcast.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, while you can get away with a bit of lackluster audio here or there on YouTube, it's essentially inexcusable for podcasts because many podcasts don't have any visuals, so audio is carrying the show.<\/p>\n<p>And, since podcasts often have guests on them, your conversational skills and interviewing abilities are even more important.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here are some skills successful podcasters have<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Being excellent communicators<\/li>\n<li>Knowing how to record crisp audio<\/li>\n<li>Being personable<\/li>\n<li>Being able to extract good or funny stories from people on their show<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In short, if you're a people person and love chatting, starting a podcast could be for you.<\/p>\n<p>Just remember that working on your audio is super important, which we're about to cover in the next section!<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Startup Costs<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Another factor to consider when choosing between a podcast or YouTube channel are the startup costs.<\/p>\n<p>I know it's possible to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmonkey.com\/start-podcasting\/\">start a successful podcast<\/a> or YouTube channel without spending much money.<\/p>\n<p>However, you're still spending some money at the start in most cases. This is what lets you list your podcast episodes on platforms like Apple Podcasts and Spotify.<\/p>\n<p>So first things first, you're going to need some sort of podcast host.<\/p>\n<p>Luckily, podcast hosts like <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzsprout.com\/?referrer_id=1915197\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Buzzsprout<\/a>&nbsp;<\/strong>let you start your own podcast for free costs can you expect with podcasting?<\/p>\n<p>Well, the two potential ones are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A high-quality podcast microphone like the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3AZ8crA\" affordable podcast host is all you need to get started.<\/p>\n<p>So in short, starting a podcast is usually cheaper than starting a YouTube channel out of the gate.<\/p>\n<p>However, podcasts require paying for hosting which is an ongoing expense.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Growing Your Audience<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>One more important consideration in the podcast vs YouTube debate is which channel is easier to grow.<\/p>\n<p>After all, you need to build an audience with your podcast or YouTube channel if you want to make money, so this is an important consideration.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Growing A YouTube Channel<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><strong>One of my favorite aspects of making money on YouTube is that you always have the potential to go viral<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>A&nbsp;<em>single&nbsp;<\/em>YouTube video doing well in YouTube's algorithm can honestly change your life or kickstart your channel.<\/p>\n<p>This is exactly what happened to me when a video I made on making money online for teens went semi-viral and got more than 500,000 views.<\/p>\n<p>This single video helped me <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmonkey.com\/get-1000-subscribers-on-youtube\/\">reach 1,000 subscribers on YouTube<\/a> and has since earned over $6,000 in income as well.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-11214 size-full\" noopener\">TubeBuddy<\/a><\/strong> to research keyword volume on YouTube to come up with video ideas.<\/p>\n<p>This is a similar process to using SEO tools like <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmonkey.com\/go\/SEMRush\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">SEMRush<\/a>&nbsp;<\/strong>to find winning blogging keywords, and honestly, TubeBuddy has made a massive difference for my channel.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6795 \" the easier platforms to grow on because you have that viral factor<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>My biggest challenge has been sticking to my niche and learning to make more captivating thumbnails because thumbnails matter a&nbsp;<em>lot&nbsp;<\/em>on YouTube.<\/p>\n<p>However, if you're new to graphic design, you can still design your first thumbnails with software like <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/partner.canva.com\/QOnyeo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Canva<\/a>&nbsp;<\/strong>and work on improving your channel's quality over time.<\/p>\n<p>The bottom line is that YouTube has some of the highest growth potential out there, so this is definitely one massive perk of this platform.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Growing A Podcast<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>I've talked with my friend Ben Leavitt about growing podcasts before, as well as plenty of other bloggers I know who have podcasts.<\/p>\n<p>In my opinion, growing an audience is very tough with a podcast.
