Ghost<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Another site like Medium is <a href=\"https:\/\/ghost.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ghost<\/a>, which claims it's &#8220;the world's most popular modern publishing platform for creating a new media platform&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9508 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.webmonkey.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Ghost.jpg\" alt=\"Ghost\" width=\"650\" height=\"305\"><\/p>\n<p>Overall, Ghost seems quite interesting.<\/p>\n<p>It's <strong>basically a mix between Medium and Patreon<\/strong>, letting you turn your current audience into a business.<\/p>\n<p>So, how does Ghost work for writers?<\/p>\n<p>Well, Ghost features include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Creating your own website<\/li>\n<li>Publishing blog posts<\/li>\n<li>Sending out newsletters<\/li>\n<li>Selling premium subscriptions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So, in short, Ghost lets writers create a sleek website, publish exclusive content, and sell premium subscriptions to build an audience of paying readers&#8230;again, think Medium + Patreon.<\/p>\n<p>Now, <strong>Ghost costs $9.99 per month<\/strong> when billed annually for a starter site, which supports up to 25,000 monthly views.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Other plans range from $29 to $199 per month<\/strong> depending on size:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9501 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.webmonkey.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Ghost-pricing.jpg\" alt=\"Ghost-pricing\" width=\"600\" height=\"233\"><\/p>\n<p>Honestly, I think Ghost could be very lucrative for you as a writer if you're an expert in your field.<\/p>\n<p>For example, if you publish in-depth investing guides\/stock tip recommendations, marketing hacks, or cover content that people would pay to read, Ghost might make sense.<\/p>\n<p>Personally, I don't think this platform is for me since I write about more general personal finance topics and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmonkey.com\/side-hustle-list\/\">side hustle ideas<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But again, if you want to build an exclusive community, I think Ghost is a nifty site like Medium to try!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Best For<\/strong>: Anyone trying to build a premium website with exclusive content.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Extra Reading &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmonkey.com\/write-short-stories-for-money\/\">How To Make Money Writing Short Stories<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>4. Your Own Blog<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>I started blogging at WebMonkey in 2018. I also started writing on Medium and republishing some of my stories there shortly after.<\/p>\n<p>At the start, I was actually making money faster with Medium, especially since it gave out $100 author bonuses randomly at the time, which I got for my story on phone farming.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But fast forward to the present, and I've given up on writing on Medium for now. This means <strong>I could likely sell TOW for around $700,000 to $800,000<\/strong>. You can also price subscriptions however you like, although I've seen many $5 to $10 monthly subscriptions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Best For<\/strong>: Medium writers who want to migrate their email list to a paid subscription version.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>6. Hubpages<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Funnily enough, <a href=\"https:\/\/hubpages.com\/user\/new\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hubpages<\/a> was one of the first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmonkey.com\/college-side-hustles\/\">college side hustle ideas<\/a> I tried out.<\/p>\n<p>Hubpages is also one of the oldest websites like Medium, and began back in 2006!<\/p>\n<p>Now, I will say that my luck on Hubpages was absolutely&nbsp;<em>abysmal<\/em>; <strong>I never made more than $25<\/strong> despite writing several articles, and this platform definitely gets a lot of flak.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9511 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.webmonkey.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Hubpages.jpg\" alt=\"Hubpages\" width=\"650\" height=\"302\"><\/p>\n<p>Here's the reason: you need a&nbsp;<em>ton&nbsp;<\/em>of reads per month to make decent money with Hubpages.<\/p>\n<p>This is because, like Vocal Media, Hubpages pays you depending on how many views you get on your content (which also has a bunch of ads).<\/p>\n<p>According to Hubpages, creators keep 60% of ad revenue, and you need a Google AdSense account to sign up.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Creators earn around $2 to $5 per 1,000 views on average<\/strong>, so I'd try Vocal as an alternative or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmonkey.com\/making-money-with-blogging\/\">start a money-making blog<\/a> instead.<\/p>\n<p>Hubpages even states: &#8220;HubPages is not a place to get rich quick! You are not likely to see significant earnings from your articles for up to two years (and that's two years spent writing high quality articles on HubPages). When you do begin to see regular payouts, they are likely to be in a range of $50 to $100 a month.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>From what I've seen, a lot of Hubpages writers actually write to try and get organic traffic to get more views. This is also easier with Hubpages since the site has immense domain authority.<\/p>\n<p>However, the fact that you have to write dozens or hundreds of articles, all while using SEO, to earn $100 a month seems like a lot of work.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, I had to include Hubpages on a list of sites like Medium.com since it's incredibly popular and some authors make bank.<\/p>\n<p>But, in my mind, I'd try out the other Medium alternatives or start your own blog before dabbling with Hubpages.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Best For<\/strong>: Writers who want to leverage Hubpages' domain authority to rank on competitive articles.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>7. News break<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsbreak.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News Break<\/a> provides local and breaking news for over 45 million monthly readers.<\/p>\n<p>And out of all the websites like Medium, News Break probably has some of the most comparable reach.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9512 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.webmonkey.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/News-Break-Website.jpg\" alt=\"News-Break-Website\" width=\"650\" height=\"303\"><\/p>\n<p>According to its website, <strong>News Break receives 1.5 billion pageviews per month<\/strong>. Additionally, its Android app is #1 in News on Google Play and the IOS app is #2 in news on the App store.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, like Medium, News Break also has popular writing categories you'd expect, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Politics<\/li>\n<li>Sports<\/li>\n<li>Economy<\/li>\n<li>Entertainment<\/li>\n<li>Health<\/li>\n<li>Tech<\/li>\n<li>Public health<\/li>\n<li>Lifestyle<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You have to apply to join the News Break Creator Program, and the process asks for your name, country of residence, email, social media links, and how you heard about News Break.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9513 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.webmonkey.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/News-Break-Creator-Program.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"224\"><\/strong>According to News Break, you hear back in 5 to 7 days if you get in. I asusme having writing samples\/a decent social media profile helps the process, but I find it strange they don't ask for writing samples.<\/p>\n<p>In any case, News Break content creators earn money from:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ad share revenue<\/li>\n<li>Referral bonuses for inviting new writers<\/li>\n<li>Guaranteed sign-on base pay for qualifying articles<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Now, News Break used to pay a $1,000 bonus for writing 12 qualifying articles (qualifying in that they had to reach a pretty high view count).<\/p>\n<p>That program is over unfortunately. Now, writers earn a fixed rate for eligible articles for their first three months of writing that ranges between <strong>$25 to $60 depending on quality<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, depending on quality&#8230;News Break assigns a Content Value (CV) score on your articles to determine how good it is and how much you earn.<\/p>\n<p>Again, this is for qualifying articles; you can't just submit a garbage article and get the base rate of $25 to $60.<\/p>\n<p>In any case, I think News Break is a potentially more stable income source than Medium, but I'll admit, a base rate of up to $60 plus some ad revenue doesn't excite me much.<\/p>\n<p>I mean,&nbsp;<em>imagine&nbsp;<\/em>a viral story on News Break versus Medium&#8230;or your own blog.
