Freelancing<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Out of all your options for selling your skills online, freelancing is the most straightforward.<\/p>\n<p>This is how I've made most of my money for the last few years. In fact, there's more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2019\/10\/03\/skilled-freelancers-earn-more-per-hour-than-70percent-of-workers-in-us.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">50 million freelancers in the U.S. alone<\/a>! I mean, everyone wants to make money selling skills online, but it takes time, dedication, and some know-how.<\/p>\n<p>However, if there's one thing that's clear, it's that playing to your strengths and building your freelancer portfolio over time is your best bet. In my case, I started out by writing for a few clients on the side of my 9-5 job since\u00a0writing was something I was decent at.<\/p>\n<p>After I got a few clients, I started branching out more and landing better gigs. After two years of blogging and writing, it made sense to quit my job.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>2. Consulting<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Becoming a consultant is another lucrative way to make money selling your skills, although this is certainly more niche.<\/p>\n<p>Technically, you can become a consultant in almost\u00a0<em>anything<\/em> as long as you find clients who are willing to pay. That being said, here are a few examples of consulting jobs you might consider:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Financial consulting<\/li>\n<li>IT consulting<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmonkey.com\/ecommerce-side-hustle\/\">Ecommerce<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Research & development work<\/li>\n<li>Human resource consulting<\/li>\n<li>Legal consulting, which can sometimes crossover with HR stuff<\/li>\n<li>Risk & compliance<\/li>\n<li>Strategy & operations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Again, this is fairly broad, and the world is truly your oyster. For example, I've been working as a consultant of sorts for one client over the past couple of months on Upwork. I've managed to earn over $10,000 from this sort of work so far.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8813 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.webmonkey.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Consulting-on-Upwork.png\" alt=\"Consulting-on-Upwork\" width=\"499\" height=\"321\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The point is: if you're an expert in something, you can probably sell your skills online for it.<\/p>\n<p>Don't be afraid to get creative, and be sure to reach out to your network to find opportunity. Marketing<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmonkey.com\/digital-marketing-side-hustle\/\">Digital marketing side hustles<\/a> are how I paid my tuition during school. I worked at an advertising agency during school and as my first full-time job.<\/p>\n<p>The reason I think marketing is an awesome skill to sell online is because, in my experience, it's a skill that's in demand and that pays incredibly well.<\/p>\n<p>In the past, a friend and I have had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmonkey.com\/how-to-make-an-extra-1000-a-month\/\">$1,000 monthly<\/a> retainers for clients in exchange for running their paid advertising efforts. SEO<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Search engine optimization, or SEO, is another common skill people sell online.<\/p>\n<p>Now, I will say that SEO has a bit of a bad reputation since\u00a0<em>so\u00a0<\/em>many people have sold it as a service in the past and either over-promised or under-delivered.<\/p>\n<p>SEO is, in all honesty, a brutally tough industry. However, if you know what you're doing and can get positive word of mouth from a few clients, you're set.<\/p>\n<p>I've worked with some ecommerce businesses, and invariably, they end up using the same SEO agency once word gets out that they deliver results.<\/p>\n<p>There are\u00a0<em>loads\u00a0<\/em>of SEO sellers on websites like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmonkey.com\/is-fiverr-worth-it\/\">Fiverr<\/a> and Upwork, so this is a feasible, albeit competitive way to get started:<\/p>\n<p><strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7893 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.webmonkey.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Fiverr-SEO.png\" alt=\"Fiverr-SEO\" width=\"799\" height=\"242\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>My advice here would be to network with bloggers in different Facebook groups and to then drive them to your Fiverr or UpWork page. Online Courses<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmonkey.com\/making-money-with-blogging\/\">Starting a blog<\/a> and selling ebooks, printables, and courses is one way to make money with online education.<\/p>\n<p>The advantage to selling your own content through a blog is that you keep most of the revenue. Plus, you can also earn income through ads and affiliate marketing. However, finding the right <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmonkey.com\/blog-niche-ideas\/\">blog niche<\/a> can be tough, and scaling your traffic takes time.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to tap into an existing market, selling courses on websites like Udemy might make more sense:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3409\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3409\" style=\"width: 750px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3409 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.webmonkey.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/sell-courses-on-Udemy.png\" alt=\"sell-courses-on-Udemy\" width=\"750\" height=\"197\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3409\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">An example of a Udemy course I found &#8211; you can get creative and sell anything!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Udemy is still competitive, but they actually do their own marketing and\u00a0<em>try\u00a0<\/em>to drive sales for you, so it can turn into a decent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmonkey.com\/passive-income-streams\/\">passive income stream<\/a> over time. Similarly, you can try <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmonkey.com\/make-money-on-amazon\/\">making money on Amazon<\/a> by selling ebooks on their marketplace.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>6. Tutoring<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Teaching is another fairly direct way to sell your skills online. Plus, depending on what you teach, your hourly rate can get very high.<\/p>\n<p>Take <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmonkey.com\/tutor-online\/\">teaching english online<\/a> for example. If you have a bachelor's degree, speak fluent English, and live in North America, you can earn more than $20 per hour potentially by working for companies like VIPKid and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmonkey.com\/qkids-review\/\">Qkids<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And if you don't just want to teach English, companies like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmonkey.com\/booknook-learning-review\/\">BookNook<\/a> also hire tutors to teach subjects like Math to students in North America.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-16861 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.webmonkey.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/BookNook-tutor-1.jpg\" alt=\"BookNook Tutor\" width=\"600\" height=\"297\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And these are just a few examples of how to sell your skills online as a tutor.\u00a0 Another lucrative one is teaching music lessons online. However, the potential revenue you can generate from a handful of clients is impressive.<\/p>\n<p>Now, there's no single recipe for becoming a successful online coach. Plus, there are plenty of industries where coaching is viable, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Business development<\/li>\n<li>Fitness<\/li>\n<li>Life coaching<\/li>\n<li>Career coach<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You'd also be amazed at how opportunities can fall in your lap if you're viewed as somewhat of a subject matter expert on something.<\/p>\n<p>I've had people ask about blog coaching or advice for college students in the past, and while it isn't a service I offer, you can make money by selling your expertise and advice.<\/p>\n<p>This money making idea is truly all about networking and refining your sales pitch.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>8. YouTube<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Alright, this might be a bit of a stretch, but I'd argue that making YouTube videos is another viable way to sell different skills online.<\/p>\n<p>I mean, what is YouTube? It's a source of entertainment, sure, but it's also a pretty substantial source of information and expertise. Plus, it can also turn into a very solid side hustle, and it's possible to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmonkey.com\/make-money-on-youtube\/\">make money on YouTube<\/a> even if you're in a competitive niche.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCfWlwgHS9mnVbIi4jNgIGtA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">I started a YouTube channel<\/a> in early 2020. Since then, it's grown to over 35,000 subscribers and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmonkey.com\/make-50-per-day\/\">makes $50 a day<\/a> or so in advertisement revenue.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-16618 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.webmonkey.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/YouTube-50-A-Day.jpg\" alt=\"YouTube 50 dollars a day\" width=\"601\" height=\"227\" \/><\/p>\n<p>All I do is talk about personal finance topics and the same content I'm already writing on WebMonkey.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, it takes work to edit and upload the videos, but this is basically repackaging some knowledge and putting it out there. YouTube ads and affiliate links then help me monetize it.<\/p>\n<p>Plus, once you get your channel up and running, it basically <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmonkey.com\/make-money-on-autopilot\/\">makes money on autopilot<\/a> since videos from years ago can still get views and generate revenue.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Tips For Selling Skills Online<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>I think the main reason people give up on making money online is that you don't get immediate gratification. Unlike <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmonkey.com\/gig-economy\/\">gig apps<\/a>, you're not always paid for the hours you put into an online venture. This makes it easy to feel like you're wasting your time.<\/p>\n<p>However, giving up too soon leaves a lot of money on the table. So, here are some of my tried-and-true tips on how you can begin pitching your first clients.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>1. Create A Portfolio<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>I've gotten a lot of pitches over the past two years from freelancers.<\/p>\n<p>These have been pitches for writers, graphic designers, SEO specialists, and more. I would say that more than half of these pitches just listed their services and then some pricing information, or an invitation to learn more.<\/p>\n<p>However, the only ones I've ever seriously considered had a portfolio to back up their claims.<\/p>\n<p>You don't need to reinvent the wheel either with your portfolio. Some simple <a href=\"https:\/\/www.siteground.com\/wordpress-hosting.htm?afcode=a6c6ba32931a7d64f470d71a4f1bdcfd&campaign=ReviewLink\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">SiteGround hosting<\/a> and a free blog theme is all you need to get started. But the real point here is to go beyond a single channel for networking, especially if you're new to freelancing.<\/p>\n<p>In the beginning, you\u00a0<em>need\u00a0<\/em>work to continue to build your portfolio and to gain experience, so grind to find it. Try social media groups, Reddit, your own network, local business directories&#8230;whatever you need to do, start networking!<\/p>\n<p>You can also try remote job sites like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmonkey.com\/is-flexjobs-legit\/\">FlexJobs<\/a> if you want to save time on your job search.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>3. Have A Value-Proposition<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Once again, a lot of the pitches I've gotten over the past two years for WebMonkey have been so-so. Additionally, many of them forget to explain why I should hire them in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>If you're selling your skills online, you're really convincing a client that they need to choose you to improve their life in some form. So, spend\u00a0<em>less\u00a0<\/em>time bragging about accolades, soft skills, or how young\/smart\/unique you are.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, spend\u00a0<em>more\u00a0<\/em>time explaining the concrete value a client will see by hiring you. Spell out the value you offer in concrete terms when pitching clients.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>4. Know Your Worth<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The final thing to keep in mind when working online is to know your worth.<\/p>\n<p>Oftentimes, I think people either massively discount themselves or inflate their hourly rate when starting out.<\/p>\n<p>The thing with freelancing is that you need to decide what your absolute floor is. You also need to have realistic expectations and accept some ugly jobs at the start to get the ball rolling.<\/p>\n<p>My advice is to put in the hard work upfront, get through the ugly jobs, and land better clients over time.
